Stereolithography (SLA), also known as resin 3D printing, is a 3D printing technology that produces parts with high resolution and accuracy, fine details and smooth surface finishes.

Stereolithography
Selective Laser SintStereolithography, or SLA, is a 3D printing technology known for achieving highly detailed and functionally accurate parts. The technology utilizes a mirror that is programmed to direct an ultraviolet laser to draw and cure a part’s cross-section onto a vat of photopolymer resin. After each layer, the build platform lowers and a recouter blade wipes over a new layer of material on the top of the tank.
Once the part is complete, it is removed from the build chamber, cleaned of support and excess resin (typically using isopropyl alcohol), and then placed in a UV oven for further curing. This ensures the part reaches its optimal physical properties.

ADVANTAGES
SLA can produce parts with very high dimensional accuracy and intricate details.
SLA parts have a very smooth surface finish, making them ideal for visual prototypes.
Speciality SLA materials are available, such as clear, flexible and castable resins.
DRAWBACKS
SLA parts are generally brittle and not suitable for functional prototypes
The mechanical properties and visual appearance of SLA parts will degrade over time when the parts are exposed to sunlight.
Support structures are always required and post-processing is necessary to remove the visual marks left on the SLA part.

Post Processing For SLA
Surface finishes can serve either a functional or aesthetic purpose. Surface finishes that serve both purposes are deemed cosmetic finishes, and are used for cosmetic parts. Producing cosmetic parts requires additional measures to minimize defects such as hang marks and scratches from tools.
